Athletic Strategic Communications Specialist

  1. Develops, implements, and directs comprehensive communications strategies designed to enhance overall campus support of Athletics as well as positively position Cal Poly Athletics to the public. 

2.   Responsible for developing and implementing an annual communications strategic plan with goals and objectives. This plan is in coordination with NCAA, Big West, and Big Sky requirements coupled with philosophical shifts in the athletic communication landscape.

3.      Serve as lead communications representative for athletic department; representing athletics to all local and national media along with serving as the liaison to Cal Poly centralized marketing and communications staff.

4.      Serve as public relations liaison for department preparing student-athletes, coaches, administrators for interviews.

5.      Plan, schedule and coordinate Athletics’ media events including news conferences, news releases and interviews.

6.      Write, layout, edit, and produce digital and print media.

7.      Oversee all aspects of athletics communications game-day operations for all sports, including statistics and record keeping, and all other required NCAA protocol.

8.      Establish and maintain working relationships and communications with local, regional, and national media. Serve as spokesperson for Athletics department to local media.

9.      Collaborate with the Athletic Marketing staff to ensure consistent use of University identity and brand identity.  Maintain awareness of trends in communication and across various social media platforms.  Assume responsibility for the maintenance of the Athletic Department’s multimedia, ensuring compliance with departmental and University web policies as well as the accuracy of the data posted.

10.  Manage all aspects of social media practices and strategies to achieve department objectives in the form of graphics, recaps, video, etc.  Ensure these social media impressions serve to better position the university and department.

11.  Lead Athletic Communications team, including assigning work, providing staff development, and productivity management.

12.  Maintain historical and photographic archives of Cal Poly Athletics, as well as team and individual student-athlete statistics. Ensure accuracy of files on all current and past sports teams, individuals, and coaches.

13.  Serve as a member of the athletic department leadership team; providing strategic direction and insight to all aspects of the operations of the athletics department.

14.  Manage and direct staff on all aspects of policy management within athletics communication.  Critical that this position is aware of all changing policy and requirements from conference and NCAA entities and able to lead the process of compliance with these policies.

15.  Partner with athletics marketing, athletics development, and Cal Poly Ticket Office to develop and implement a robust marketing and communications strategy designed to support ticket sales and department philanthropic giving.

16.  Travel to select off-campus events (team and general) as media liaison.

17.  Oversee all aspects of  budget for strategic communications.

  1. Contribute to and edit athletic information for campus-wide, alumni and marketing/communications publications and new releases; develop communication themes, concepts and ideas and determine methods to achieve goals.
