Assistant Director, Sports Medicine

Oversees the daily clinical operations and the delivery of care of the sports medicine department, including but not limited to:

  • Department scheduling, staff, coordination of weekly physician clinic and game coverage, and coordination of EMT coverage for home events as needed.

  • Oversees administrative coordination of Pre-Participation Physicals and assures all student-athletes have proper medical clearance.

  • Manages all medical records (paper and electronic).

  • Coordinates insurance procedures.

  • Serves on the Athletics Care Team.

  • Manages and supervises clinical emersion students.

  • Coordinates health and safety education initiatives for department personnel including coaches, staff, and student-athletes.

  • Coordinates Sports Medicine Staff annual and biannual training.

  • Coordinates onboarding of new athletic trainers.

  • Provides feedback and assists in annual reviews of the athletic trainers.

  • Provides feedback and direction with complicated cases.

  • Coordinates specials projects e.g., grants, education modules.

  • Communicates directly with coaches of assigned sport teams all injuries and illnesses of student-athletes as well as ongoing rehabilitation and treatments, medical appointments, and participation status for practices and competitions.

  • Handles questions and concerns from all coaches related to the medical care of their student-athletes in the absence of the Director of Sports Medicine.

  • Documents and maintains accurate injury records.

  • Organizes rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.

  • Cooperates and collaborates with strength and conditioning staff.

  • Coordinates and maintains oversight of all student athlete medical referrals in order to ensure that appropriate referral sources are used (best available treatment option for the situation or condition).

  • Coordinates biweekly injury roundtable discussion to include confirmation of injury as well as current care plans.

  • Coordinates care for all eating disorders.

  • Collaborates with team physicians, Emory Student Health Services, and other allied healthcare professional providers.

  • Communicates directly with coaches, parents, student-athletes, athletic administration, and other stakeholders when appropriate.

  • Educates student-athletes with respect to injury prevention, nutrition, and psychological support in dealing with injuries.

  • Educates coaches and staff regarding anticipated response and management of potential injuries/illnesses.

  • Maintains Athletic Training Room coverage. This includes being present in the Athletic Training Room during scheduled open hours to see walk-in athletes.

  • Participates in initiatives that align with the mission of Emory University and Emory Healthcare.

  • Promotes and supports the strategic plan of the Department of Athletics.

  • Ensures that all assigned tasks comply with university, University Athletic Association (UAA), and NCAA rules and best practice standards.

  • Abides by all university, UAA, and NCAA policies and procedures.

  • Attends and participates in department and Campus Life meetings and events as required.

  • Performs other related duties and administrative tasks as assigned and commensurate with the normal activities related to collegiate varsity sport athletic training service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master's degree and three years of related experience.

  • Current NATABOC certification and eligibility for licensure in the state of Georgia.

  • Ability to work effectively and independently with students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members.

  • Successful candidates will possess strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
