Assistant Athletic Trainer

Florida International University in Miami is seeking applications for two Assistant Athletic Trainers (sport assignments: Men's Basketball and Women's Soccer). FIU is a member of Conference USA and offers eighteen (17) NCAA Division I sports programs. The successful candidate will assists with coordination and administration of Sports Medicine program. Assists Head Athletic Trainer in a manner that provides for competent and complete medical care for all student athletes participating in sports in Intercollegiate Athletics. Duties include: 

  • works cooperatively with and under the direction of the team physician and standing order protocols in respect to evaluation, treatment, modality use and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Assists the team physician in determining whether a student-athlete is medically fit for participation in practices and/or games.

  • Assists with supervising the athletic training facility, including request and requisitioning of equipment and supplies, and secured storage and inventory control of equipment and supplies. Assist with maintaining clean and organized medical facility.

  • Assists in the coordination and administration of student-athlete (pre-participation/post-season) physical exams.

  • Educates the student-athletes, coaches, student athletic trainers on injury trends, injury potential and safety and prevention strategies.

  • Responsible for following procedures within our concussion management plan and educating student-athletes, coaches and staff on concussion safety.

  • Maintains thorough medical records of the student-athletes healthy history, insurance coverage, medical referrals, injury treatments and rehabilitation in the department EMR.

  • Assists with correspondence and securing authorizations for medical referrals for coordination and utilizing the student-athletes primary insurance to assist with cost mitigation.

  • Consults with university/department psychologist and refers students experiencing mental wellness issues to appropriate personnel.

  • Assists with coordination, supervision and administration of educational and practical experiences for DAT's, graduate assistants, interns and student athletic trainers as governed by the NATA. Assists with GA/student selection and administration of GA orientation. Assists with supervision of student athletic trainers.

  • Serves as liaison for student-athletes with physicians, medical specialists, student counseling services, student health services, local hospitals, and other health care facilities as necessary.

  • Works cooperatively with coaches and equipment staff in selecting the protective      equipment and checking it for safety.

  • Coordinates sports medicine services for visiting teams.

  • Maintains confidentiality for the department. Treats with utmost confidentiality and sensitivity any matter pertaining to academic, medical and personal data of student athletes and any information either directly or indirectly impacting the University and/or Athletic Department.

  • Adheres to all State of Florida, University, NCAA, Conference USA and department rules and policies pertaining to the position of Athletic Trainer. Reports any known NCAA violations or concerns to the Director of Athletic Compliance and be responsible for the monitoring of any subordinate as it relates to NCAA regulations.
