Head Men's Volleyball Coach

MAJOR PURPOSE

The Head Coach is responsible for instructing, initiating, developing, and leading a consistently competitive athletic program, including recruiting, scheduling opponents, individual training, and coaching team members.   This position mentors and challenges student-athletes to grow spiritually (discipleship), academically, and athletically in order to provide opportunities for Christian service through the medium of athletic competition. This position provides support for specific internal operations for the athletic department and must abide by rules and regulations established by Jessup University’s written mission and vision statement, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) and the PacWest (Pacific West Conference).


The pay for this position is generally $70,304.00. Individual pay is generally determined by a number of factors including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training and location.


This position is 100% in person either on the campus or at off site venues. Travel and weekend hours are required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coaching & Program Leadership Functions

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive year-round training and competitive plan for the men’s volleyball program

  • Oversees the spiritual, academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes

  • Establishes and maintains a positive team culture aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the university and athletic department

  • Monitors academic progress and promotes academic accountability and retention among student-athletes

  • Collaborates with athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports information, admissions, compliance staff, and success coaches to support student-athlete success

  • Evaluates team and individual performance through video analysis, scouting reports, and statistical review

  • Organizes and conducts individual skill development sessions and team training activities

  • Maintains appropriate standards of conduct, discipline, and sportsmanship for student-athletes and staff

NCAA Compliance & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintains full compliance with all NCAA, conference, university, and athletic department rules, regulations, and policies

  • Completes all required NCAA compliance documentation and recruiting records in a timely manner

  • Monitors eligibility, recruiting activities, playing and practice seasons, and amateurism requirements

  • Participates in departmental professional development and NCAA rules education programs

Recruiting Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes a strategic recruiting plan to identify, evaluate, and attract qualified prospective student-athletes

  • Builds and maintains relationships with club coaches, high school coaches, recruits, and community partners

  • Utilizes recruiting software, video platforms, and database management systems to organize recruiting efforts

  • Assists prospective student-athletes through the admissions and financial aid process

Community Engagement & Advancement

  • Promotes the men’s volleyball program through community engagement, alumni relations, and public appearances

  • Assists with donor cultivation, alumni engagement, and special events in partnership with athletic advancement staff

  • Supports athletic department initiatives, game management responsibilities, and special events as assigned

  • Engages in social media and promotional efforts that positively represent the university and athletic department

Operational & Personnel Oversight

  • Supervises graduate assistants, student workers, team managers, and volunteer coaches as assigned

  • Ensures proper inventory, maintenance, and care of equipment, uniforms, and facilities

  • Coordinates team meals, lodging, and travel logistics in accordance with university policies

  • Assists with home match operations and event management responsibilities

Fundraising & External Relations Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes an annual fundraising plan in support of the men’s volleyball program and the athletic department

  • Cultivates relationships with alumni, donors, parents, community members, and corporate partners to generate financial support for the program

  • Collaborates with the Athletic Director and Advancement Office on fundraising initiatives, donor engagement, sponsorship opportunities, and special events

  • Organizes and participates in fundraising events, camps, clinics, and community engagement activities designed to enhance program visibility and financial sustainability

  • Assists in achieving annual fundraising goals established by the athletic department

  • Promotes and supports athletic giving campaigns and institutional advancement initiatives

  • Maintains appropriate stewardship and communication with program supporters and donors

QUALIFICATIONS


Education/Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Master’s degree, and additional studies/experiences preferred


Required Knowledge/Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of volleyball

  • Knowledge of and commitment to Jessup University mission statement and philosophy, the NCAA, and conference rules and regulations

  • A minimum of 5 years coaching and recruiting experience at the college level or equivalent related experience.

  • Experience supervising volunteers and staff

  • Requires a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive on university-related business (i.e. to practices, games, etc. including transporting students) according to Jessup insurance requirements

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

WORKING CONDITIONS

Much of the employee’s working time will be spent on indoor and or outdoor sports venues in all types of weather and might require standing for long periods, moderate to loud noise levels; and tile, concrete, carpeted floors, courts with hardwood floors, concrete floor warehouse, and outdoor grassy areas. The employee may be exposed to heat/sun or inclement weather when working outdoors.

  • Ability to lift, pull, grasp, pass, catch, stoop, reach and demonstrate in game, practice or training environment and to execute daily office related tasks

  • Will regularly require physical activity like walking, passing, shooting, catching, demonstrating on a consistent basis 

  • May require climbing stairs indoors or outdoors to various spaces on and off campus 

  • Regularly requires the ability to drive student-athletes to and from contests and team functions as well as driving to and from recruiting events 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
