Assistant Coach Men's Heavyweight Crew

General Responsibilities

 

This is a full-time assistant coaching position.  The responsibilities include assisting the Head Coach of Heavyweight Men’s Crew with all aspects of conducting a successful crew program, including but not limited to: recruiting, administration, weekly practice sessions, budget management, alumni stewardship, scheduling of competitions, team travel, counseling of students, and compliance with NCAA and conference rules and regulations. All activities to be conducted under the overall supervision of the Director of Rowing.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

·       Assist the head coach in leading a quality varsity program that is competitively challenging and meets the needs of participating students.

 

·       Recruit academically qualified student-athletes. This includes:

 

·       Developing an understanding of MIT’s admissions standards and procedures.

 

·       Identifying and recruiting potential student athletes who meet MIT’s academic standards.

 

·       Maintaining all required recruiting records, including those related to contacts, evaluations, official visits, phone calls, etc.

 

·       Having primary responsibility on the heavyweight men’s coaching staff for recruiting communications and travel.

 

·       Working with head coach and other MIT crew coaches to increase walk-on numbers and retain walk-on athletes.

 

·       Under the supervision of the head coach, develop and implement a training plan for novice and lower-boat rowers, with an emphasis on rowing proficiency, physical development and team building.  Oversee daily practice sessions.

 

·       Assist the head coach in fostering alumni engagement with and support of the team. 

 

·       Assist the head coach in overseeing all administrative aspects of the program.  This includes but is not limited to:

 

·       Keeping a calendar of administrative duties and deadlines, including required DAPER meetings and paperwork.

 

·       Working with the head coach to ensure that all administrative duties and deadlines are fulfilled.

 

·       Working with the head coach and Director of Rowing to manage the program’s budget.

 

·       Assist the head coach with planning home and away contests, including working with other host institutions and MIT personnel in event management.

 

·       Completing travel expense reports in a timely manner.

 

·       Provide team statistics and other relevant materials to Director of Athletics Communications. Specifically:

 

·       Submit race summaries to the sports information office within 24 hours of each contest.

 

·       Obtain photographs of the team suitable for use in communications with alumni (Squaring the Blade and email updates) and by the sports information office.

 

·       Cooperate with other crew coaches and staff in sharing boathouse resources, duties and responsibilities, as directed by the Director of Rowing.

 

·       Ensure proper safety precautions are followed at all times.

 

·       Participate in collaborative activities across DAPER.

 

·       Adherence to regulations and completion of forms associated with MIT, conference and national governance regulations at the NCAA Division I membership level.

 

·       Assist head coach with rigging shells and maintaining equipment.

 

·       Competent fulfillment of other administration duties as assigned 

Requirements

5 years rowing and/or coaching experience, preferably at the Division I level.  A bachelor’s degree is required. Proven experience in recruiting to a highly selective institution is desirable. Administrative, interpersonal/communication skills and computer skills are essential. Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Biohazards are required within an appropriate time of hire. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
