The Mountain West (MW), an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and College Football Playoff athletic conference, is accepting applications for Assistant Director, Digital & Social Media.

 

General Description

The Assistant Director, Digital & Social Media, will report to Associate Commissioner, Strategic Communications, and serve the Conference and its member institutions to assist with the day-to-day administration of digital and social media to execute content aligned with the MW strategic plan and provide key messages of the Conference and its member institutions.

 

The overall impact of this role is to provide a consistent, compelling user experience across the MW’s digital enterprise, improving the Conference's visibility and that of its members, and contributing to the Conference’s brand and positive reputation, thereby reaching more alumni, media and potential student recruits and their families.

 

By managing content, external communication, and social media, the Assistant Director will safeguard a positive student-athlete experience and well-being and maintain focus on initiatives designed to elevate MW to the highest possible levels of performance and exposure.

 

Utilizing this member-centered approach is consistent with the MW’s mission to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Develop and execute a year-round social media strategy for the Mountain West that emphasizes the brand and voice (Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok). Ensure the voice, tone, and mix of content are aligned with the MW Strategic Plan and key messages of the Conference and its member institutions.

  • Create attractive social media posts that catch the audience's attention and generate engagement.

  • Produce high-level graphic designs that elevate the MW brand’s profile. Develop, maintain and advance the brand's identity through original and creative design concepts for a variety of digital and printed materials, including, but not limited to: social media graphics, posters, website and e-mail graphics, paid media collateral, logos, and varied promotional materials.

  • Create templates for Championships for all content (final scores, brackets, featured stats, daily schedules, ticket sales, Champions, etc.).

  • Monitor social media channels to manage MW’s online reputation and moderate conversations with internal and external constituents about the MW brand.

  • Track and analyze analytics from various tools to monitor the performance and assess the effectiveness of the MW’s social media. Establish and deliver annual audience growth targets for MW social platforms.

  • Create a comprehensive social media coverage plan for each MW championship, including a list of responsibilities for on-site and remote team members.

  • Develop and maintain a social media content calendar for the MW External Team to ensure all coverage gets maximum reach and content is spread out.

  • Direct social media room/content on site at Football and Basketball Media Days, including content gathered by fellows for live coverage.

  • Support the execution of MW Command Center on Saturdays during the football season.

  • Help develop and execute the promotion plan for MW+, the Mountain West’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, to boost viewership and subscriptions.

  • Travel to MW and NCAA Championships as necessary.

  • May oversee remote fellows who assist with MW’s social media strategy, including posting highlights, final score graphics and championship coverage. Host weekly meetings to handle training, review responsibilities, and answer questions. Create templates they can easily use for Players of the Week, championship coverage and other content.

  • Collaborate with the MW’s Strategic Communications team to provide comprehensive and accurate coverage, as well as engaging, impactful, unique, and diverse content, from the league and its membership in a timely fashion to TheMW.com and the Conference’s social channels.

  • Collaborate with the social teams on each campus to improve engagement on social coverage year-round. Amplify institutional coverage to strengthen MW’s reach. Track institutional engagement with MW’s coverage and reach out when needed to ensure the institutions remain engaged.

  • Contact for the MW’s highlights program, assisting membership with configuring of their institutional equipment, as well as providing feeds for in-broadcast highlights from each of the MW championships. Utilize the service for in-game highlights during the football and men’s basketball regular seasons and all MW and NCAA championship events to provide social media coverage and attract an audience to the full broadcasts.

  • Point of contact with Magnifi for postgame highlights. Work with the strategic communications team to determine which games will be selected for postgame highlights. Work with the strategic communications team and fellows to schedule who is posting each highlight to various channels (X, Facebook, YouTube, website).

  • Archive all footage gathered at MW Championships on Social Media Dropbox for future use.

  • Publish Mountain West Network videos on social media platforms, including Players of the Week, feature stories, championship previews, etc.

  • Primary point of contact for the college sports partner teams at Meta and X. Work together to identify engagement opportunities and refine best practices, as well as troubleshoot issues for the MW membership.

  • Work with MW marketing team and JMI Sports to ensure all social media sponsorship elements are fulfilled.

  • Assist the compliance department with SAAC initiatives, including website and social media coverage.

  • Demonstrated high-level proficiency in Microsoft programs (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign), Capcut/Premiere and other relevant software required.

  • Strong graphic design knowledge, including layout, typography, branding, and visual storytelling, with the ability to create engaging digital and social content.

  • Knowledge of digital/social media equipment (DSLR cameras, etc.).

  • Expansive knowledge of social media platforms and emerging trends

  • Understanding of social media platforms, including posting strategies, content creation, and engagement techniques.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Ability to collaborate with strategic communications teams to determine content priorities and scheduling.

  • Ability to lead fellows, providing direction and support in executing social media strategies.

  • Capacity to work closely with cross-functional teams, including social media, strategic communications and broadcast production.

  • Ability to foster positive relationships with partner institutions and internal team members to ensure effective collaboration and support.

General

  • Working knowledge of Division I intercollegiate athletics, the MW and its institutions’ programs and/or higher education.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the MW core values of competitive excellence, academic achievement, integrity, relentless drive, community, and inclusion.

  • Represent the MW and its member institutions with pride and professionalism.

  • Effective organizational skills for managing schedules, templates, and logistics.

  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and requirements in a fast-paced environment.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 1-5 years’ experience in a related field.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Previous direct experience at a college, university, conference, or professional sports franchise.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituents, including student-athletes, coaches, university and athletic staff and administrators, and various Conference partners.

  • Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours (weekends, weekdays, nights, and holidays).

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Sprout Social platform for scheduling, analytics, etc.

  • Knowledge of Slate template builder.

 

Travel Requirements

20 - 30% of travel.
