What You Will Do

  • The Athletics Academic Coordinator will provide academic support to assigned student-athletes and emphasize the importance of academics to these student-athletes.  This position will assist assigned student-athletes with developing the necessary skills that will lead to academic success.  The Athletics Academic Coordinator will regularly communicate with student athletes, coaches, and administrative staff and ensure that academic concerns are addressed in a timely manner.

  • Compliance with NCAA rules is of the utmost importance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  As a member of the athletics department staff, it is expected that the Athletics Academic Coordinator will have a full understanding of the NCAA rules that pertain to the position.  It is also expected that the Athletics Academic Coordinator will comply with all NCAA rules and if he/she becomes aware, or have reasonable cause to believe, that a violation of a rule has occurred he/she will immediately report it to the Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics or his/her designee. 

  • Monitor NCAA progress towards degree requirements and advise student athletes accordingly. Perform eligibility audits on incoming transfers and freshmen. Discuss academic support services with prospective student athletes.  Provide coaches with feedback on admissibility.  Evaluate prospective student athletes academic information; communicate with prospective student athletes and coaches of any initial or continuing eligibility concerns.

  • Meet with first year and academically at-risk student athletes on a regularly basis to foster academic success, identify at risk students and provide timely interventions and support to promote positive academic progress and successful progression toward graduation. Monitor student athletes progress in classes and communicate issues and/or concerns to coaches and sport administrators.  

  • Meet with Student Athletes to provide accurate, current curricular information on programs.  Maintain accurate and up to date student records using university systems. Educate students on institutional policies and procedures, including degree requirements, course add/drop procedures, and graduation requirements.  

  • Provide consistent and frequent communication to coaches and sport administrators on academic progress of assigned student-athletes.  Prepare regular reports for coaches and sport administrators that provide detailed information on academic performance, study hall, and tutoring hours.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Academic Advisor I Master's Degree
Academic Advisor II Master's Degree + 2 Years of Direct Advising Experience

-Excellent communication skills 
-Demonstrated ability to multitask and maintain strong organizational skills
-Ability to interact with a variety of individuals, including student athletes, coaches, and faculty/staff
-Proficiency in using technology 

Preferred Qualifications
-Knowledge of NCAA bylaws related to academic eligibility
