
Under the leadership of the Deputy A.D. for Athlete Development & Leadership/SWA and direction of the head team physician, this position is responsible for leading the administration and execution of injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and care for student-athletes within Athletics, University, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations, as well as NATA guidelines/best practices related to student-athlete health and safety.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Serves as the Athletics Health Care Administrator.
• Serves as the UCF representative for the Big XII Student-Athletic Health and Wellbeing Advisory Group.
• Serves as the NCAA Catastrophic Injury reporter.
• In collaboration with the medical director/team physicians, oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes (except football). Ensures medical coverage for all countable athletic related activities, including, but not limited to games, practices, and conditioning.
• Partners with institutional risk management to identify, assess, and mitigate areas of risk.
• Ensures full compliance with NCAA, Big XII, and university policies and regulations.
• Provides leadership and oversight for athletic training personnel (full-time staff/interns/students), including scheduling, sport assignments, and coverage of athletic training facilities. Collaborates with the Medical Director and administrative leadership on the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluation of athletic trainers.
• Delivers direct clinical care to student-athletes, where appropriate.
• Oversees compliance with all state regulations and institutional requirements related to X-ray unit operations.
• Researches and implements best practices to ensure proficiency in emergency care, injury prevention and reduction, student-athlete recovery, and return-to-play progression, aligned with evidence-based standards and guidelines established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).
• Develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive sports medicine policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines in alignment with industry best practices and in alignment with NCAA, Big 12 Conference, university and NATA standards.
• Facilitates proactive communication and collaboration among team physicians, administrative leadership, athletic training staff, sports psychology, performance nutrition, sports performance and coaching staff regarding student-athlete health, wellness, injury status, and participation. Serves as primary liaison for third party providers, including massage therapy and chiropractic services, where appropriate.
• Oversees the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system for student-athlete health documentation.
Directs insurance operations in collaboration with the insurance coordinator, ensuring compliance with Athletics policies and HIPAA, including coverage (primary and secondary), claims processing, and authorization/payment of services.
• Collaborates with internal units to develop, implement, and regularly review emergency action plans for all practice and competition venues in accordance with NCAA and NATA guidelines/regulations.
• Oversees the administration of student-athlete pre-participation physical examinations, drug testing, and medical referrals.
• Manages the sports medicine budget and inventory, including planning, procurement, and fiscal oversight. Cultivates and maintains vendor relationships to support operational needs.
• Oversees the ordering, distribution, and management of over the counter (OTC) medications in accordance with established protocols.
Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of directly related professional experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of directly related experience.
• NATABOC Certified in Athletic Training
• Florida State Athletic Training Licensed (or eligible for licensure)
Preferred Qualifications:
• Head Athletic Trainer experience at the collegiate level
Due to the nature/scope of Athletics and Athletics events, position may require work during evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as the ability to stand / walk for extended periods of time and occasional travel.
