Academic Advisor

The Athletic Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising and support to a large population of undergraduate and graduate student-athletes across various programs. This role manages an assigned caseload of student-athletes, offering individualized academic planning, including major-specific course selection, to promote timely progression and graduation. 

Advisors guide students through academic requirements, institutional policies, and available campus resources, ensuring they are connected to appropriate support services such as mentors, tutors, and success programs. Through a holistic and student-centered approach, the advisor fosters an inclusive and engaging environment that enhances students’ academic success, professional growth, and sense of belonging. 

Responsibilities

Student Caseload Management

  • Advises students towards graduation and current NCAA rules and eligibility, including daily, weekly, and/or monthly meetings with students, registration of student-athletes during priority registration, AIQ, and drop/add periods

  • Manages a caseload of approximately 100 student-athletes by providing timely, accurate, and developmentally appropriate academic advising throughout the academic year

  • Develops, maintains, and regularly updates individualized academic plans that align with students' academic and career goals alongside NCAA rules and regulations

  • Facilitates registration processes, course selection, and degree planning while helping students understand major and minor requirements, university policies, academic standing, and graduation pathways

  • Monitors students’ academic progress through timely interventions, consistent communication, and detailed record-keeping using the Navigate platform or other designated case management systems

  • Addresses academic challenges, attempts to anticipate potential obstacles to student success when feasible, and respond with personalized strategies and interventions to promote retention and timely graduation

  • Guides students in understanding academic policies such as course overrides, petitions, appeals, probation/suspension, academic forgiveness, GPA improvement strategies, and late withdrawals in a timely manner

  • Manages processes aligned with these policies for students in caseload as appropriate

  • Assists students in acclimating to UTC and the relevant curriculum, policies, and resources

  • Provides courteous, responsive, and professional service in all student interactions, embodying the advising team’s commitment to student achievement and institutional excellence

  • Serves as a "pathfinder," helping students develop problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, and self-advocacy by teaching them how to access information and utilize campus resources independently

  • Actively contributes to a learning environment that supports inclusion, fosters a sense of belonging, and aligns with student development best practices

  • Helps students become aware of professional expectations regarding time management and communication through the advising process

Student-Athlete Tutoring & Equipment Program

  • Hires, trains, and monitors a selection of tutors

  • Matches student request with appropriate tutors

  • Maintains and processes tutoring payroll

  • Maintains and checks in/out devices such as laptops for student-athlete use

  • Collaborates with IT and facilities for the general maintenance of our study hall rooms and computer lab

  • Provides supervision of student employees (tutors)

  • Performs administrative duties such as reporting, TeamWorks, Study Hall, Orientation, Admissions, Banner, CA, Initial Eligibility, etc.

  • Recruitment of student-athletes to the University including initial evaluations and visits

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of current NCAA rules and regulations

  • Knowledge of Teamworks

  • Skill with transfer articulations

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work effectively with students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels

  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines

  • Ability to supervise student workers and term employees

  • Proficient use of computers, knowledge of and ability to learn various software programs

  • Attentiveness to detail and strong organization skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in sport administration, education, psychology, social work, or related field

  • Two years of experience in a secondary or higher education setting working with student-athletes' academic needs or related experiences

  • Experience may include providing advising services, coordinating other student support services

  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 

     

Preferred: A master’s degree and work background in a higher education setting, working with student-athletes by providing advising services or coordinating support services is preferred.
